Purpose & Responsibilities

Purpose

To promote a heightened awareness of equity and diversity through educational, social and professional opportunities.

To provide an opportunity for all Association members to become involved in the affiliated areas of the Housing program, ensure representation of under-represented and identified special interest groups in all aspects of the Association, and encourage networking and the sharing of ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the creation, support, and maintenance of WACUHO resource and social network (s) of under-represented and identified special interest groups throughout the Western region
  • Render recommendations and guidelines to all committees in regards to issues of cultural sensitivity and affirmative action guidelines
  • Maintain an active Association Diversity Clearing House which will include diversity related resources and materials
  • Solicit nominations and render a deserving member institution and individual special recognition awards for diversity education and achievement at the Annual Conference. The award may be a plaque, trophy, or nice certificate. There shall be a $200 and $100 cash award attached to the deserving member institution and individual respectively. The deserving member institution may choose from two (2) options on how to use the cash portion of the award: 1) donate it to a diversity related community, non-profit organization in the name of WACUHO and that institution, or 2) apply it to diversity related resources or development of staff. The deserving member individual may choose from three (3) options on how to use the cash portion of the award: 1) donate it to a diversity related community, non-profit organization in the name of WACUHO and that individual, 2) apply it to diversity related resources or professional development, or 3) give it directly to their home institution to be used towards that person's professional development. If the deserving institution chooses option two (2) or the deserving individual chooses options two (2) or three (3), then they must submit an article to the WACUHO WAVES within one calendar year of how they used the cash portion and how it benefited them
  • Coordinate an open Equity and Diversity Awarness reception at the Annual Conference
  • Solicit facilitators to conduct Network meetings at the Annual Conference and request from the Annual Conference Program Committee time and space to hold the Network. The Networks shall not necessarily be limited to, but include at least the following groups: African American, Asian American, GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender), Latino/ a, Men, Native American, Persons with Different Abilities, and Women
  • Work with the Annual Conference Program, WTI Chair, and RAP Chairs to ensure inclusion of equity and diversity representation in all conference program efforts
  • In conjunction with the Chairs, evaluate program proposals for each RAP and be prepared to present the "Cultural Awareness and Understanding" or "Social Justice and Change" award to paraprofessional staff participants for their presentation of diversity related programs at the RAPs
  • Communicate with the Nominations Chair regarding recruitment of a diverse slate of Executive Committee candidates
  • Submit budget requests
  • Submit an informative article or update per issue of the WACUHO WAVES newsletter
  • Submit a brief abstract by January to the Program Committee Chair(s) for inclusion in the program notebook
  • Prepare and submit an annual report to the WACUHO Vice President by May 1st,which summarizes the committee's activity during the year
