 WACUHO Email Announcements

WACUHO occasionally sends email announcemnets out to our membership. Only emails approved by the Association President in support of official WACUHO business are sent. However, some email systems filter out those messages as "spam" or "junk." We will therefore begin also posting announcements to this website. We will do our best to post the announcement shortly after the initial email is sent. If you do not receive the WACUHO emails, please consider checking this site regularly.

Dear Colleague,

Institutions in Northern California or outside of California have the opportunity to host the WACUHO Annual Conference in 2010.  The Time and Place Committee is looking for a few good institution(s) interested in bidding to host this great event.  You don't have to go it alone either.  If it so moves you, call up a colleague and make it a partnership venture.

WACUHO Committee Email

Greetings WACUHO Members:

While summer time can be labeled as rest for some, it is also a time for planning.  Have you been thinking of ways to enhance your professional involvement?  Joining a WACUHO Committee can do just that.  In addition, you are networked to valuable resources within the organization by making important connections with colleagues across the region.

It is not too late to join a committee for the upcoming academic year.  Just go to www.wacuho.org and fill out a committee appointment form.  (You can also learn about the different committees at the WACUHO Website). Then, send the form back to me via email, fax, or snail mail.  It is just that easy!!

We realize that summer is also a time for transition, and folks may not get this form.  Please pass this on to any new staff members you have so that they can experience the benefits of WACUHO.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  I look forward to working with all of you this year.

Sincerely,
James C. Smith

Our volunteer system has always kept WACUHO strong and we would love for you to become a part of one of our committees.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. If you are unable to join us on a committee for next year, please forward this email to your colleagues at work who may not receive this email on account that they have not been added to the WACUHO directory.

Once you login, there is a link at the top of the page to “Edit Information Below.” Choose that if anything needs to be updated, or if you would like to change your login password. At the bottom of the page is also a link to register for the Annual Conference (make sure to select the appropriate link … Corporate Partners would choose the “Exhibitor Annual Conference 2007”, all other members the “WACUHO Annual Conference 2007”). Anytime there is online registration for a conference, a link should appear on your individual membership page.

In addition, note that you can look up information on colleagues from around the region by clicking on “View Online Directory” at the top of this page. One thing we would encourage you to do … do a “search” on this page for your own educational institution. You should see a listing with information about your school, and all of the individuals in your department. If that information is incorrect, or if individuals are missing, please email the contact person at your school (their email is at the bottom of the institutional page next to “email”) and request that they update the membership for your institution. This will help WACUHO make sure all of our directory information is up to date.

WACUHO Host SRAP 2007!

Hello WACUHO Southern Members!

Interested in showcasing your institution to 500+ RAs and Student Leaders throughout the region?  Put your institution on the map by hosting next year's Southern RAP.  Friday, March 9, the SRAP 2006 committee will be congregating to look over bids from various potential host institutions in the Southern Region.  Bids should include information on catering, parking, volunteers, classrooms for sessions and in general what the accommodations for the 500+ delegates would include.  Also, please include cost estimates on costs for the day.

Talk with your staff about the benefits of hosting and submit a bid to have next year's Southern RAP be at your institution. If you think that only large institutions can host a RAP you're mistaken - all you need is a facility large enough to hold the delegations and a lot of heart.  The SRAP committee and you can work together to make it happen.

Thanks,

-Jacques

WACUHO Diversity and Affirmative Action Awards

Dear WACUHO Member,

Does your institution or department or any specific member of it go above and beyond the call of duty when addressing issues related to diversity or affirmative action?  The WACUHO Diversity and Affirmative Action committee would like to invite you to nominate your colleagues and/or institution for a Diversity and Affirmative Action (D&AA) Award of Recognition.  The presentation of the award will take place in April at the annual conference being held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in beautiful Palm Springs, CA

Your nomination would provide you with the opportunity to recognize your peers for their efforts in promoting diversity and awareness on their campus.  The Diversity and Affirmative Action committee will select one individual and one institution who have made significant contributions during the 2006-2007 academic year.  The winners will receive a cash prize in addition to a commemorative plaque.  We realize that this recognition comes after the fact but it is our hope that these awards enable the recipients to continue promotion of Diversity and Affirmative Action through educational, social and professional opportunities.  Pay special attention to the criteria listed on the nomination form.  Feel free to attach any appropriate and relevant materials supporting the individual or institution to be recognized.

Please be advised that all nomination forms and supporting materials must be postmarked no later than February 28, 2007.  If you have any questions about completing the nomination form or about the awards in general, please feel free to contact Mia Love novegies@stanford.edu or (650) 724-3680.

Thank you in advance for your participation!

Mia Love, DAA Chair

WACUHO Website Temporary Interruption

Hello WACUHO Members!

As per our earlier email, WACUHO is switching servers.

This requires us to "repoint" our DNS regisration for www.wacuho.org. During this transfer, which should take place within the next 24 -36 hours, there may be some inaccessibility of the WACUHO website. However, after that, full functionality should be restored.

The web address will still be www.wacuho.org, nothing about that will change.

We appreciate your patience in this process.

WACUHO Server Switch

Hello WACUHO!

I am emailing because WACUHO is switching server hosts.

The server is the actual machine which houses all of the information for our WACUHO website, including all of our database information. The host is the company which provides and maintains access to the server. Over the last several years, we have had ongoing problems with our current host, including downtime (time when our website was not accessible) and lack of response to help requests. The Executive Committee has been discussing these issues and recently determined to go with a new host company.

We are beginning the process of that shift today. The website will still be available. However, users will not be able to access database-related functions (including conference registrations and the directory).

Other than that, you should see no change.

We will continue to email our membership about the process, so you will receive updates about what is going on.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

WACUHO Sad News

Dear WACUHO,

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the death of one of our WACUHO family, Syd Bassow.  Syd was the President and owner of Bassow Sales Company and corporate friend.  For many years, Syd and Mary have been a given at annual conferences, smiling and welcoming all with stories to share and items to show.

Syd was known to all, and in 2002 Syd was chosen as the RW Gang Award recipient for his constant support for the association.  An on-line article about his life

(http://www.legacy.com/chicoer/Obituaries.asp) aptly notes that Syd was "really in the business of touching peoples' lives and putting smiles on their faces with his incredible gifts of hospitality and humor."  Anyone who has interacted or worked with Syd would wholeheartedly agree.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Mary, Larry and the rest of the family.

Please feel free to send the family an on-line condolence message at nbcfh.com.

Sincerely,
Alex Belisario
WACUHO President

Subject: WACUHO Annual Conference Broadcast

Hello Passengers! The landing gear is down and we are on final approach for the 50th WACUHO Conference! Some last minute landing instructions from the flight crew:

Remember that the opening reception on Sunday is all about school/company spirit! Show your pride and colors! Let folks know where you are from!!! Find an excuse to go shopping at the campus bookstore! You may need that warm jacket or sweatshirt because....

..the 10 day forecast for this area is for rain and showers. Prepare yourself. The location of the hotel (next to the bay) can bring cold gusty wind as well. Good news: I think the pool is heated.

Want to see the hotel? Paste this link: http://sanfranciscoairport.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/ The website has a cool virtual tour of guest rooms and public areas.

Taking a shuttle to the hotel from an airport? Remember, we are at the the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport located in Burlingame. There is a free shuttle from SFO, make sure you are on the right one. There at least three other Hyatts in the SF area...make sure to get to ours.

Dress it up! The conference grand banquet preferred dress on Tuesday Night is Black, White, and Gold. Not tuxedo formal, but black and white are the colors of choice.

Time zone change during flight!!! Remember to set your clocks ahead this weekend.

On behalf of your planning crews, welcome to WACUHO 2006. We know you have several conferences to choose from so we thank you for choosing WACUHO 2006. Watch your step as you disembark.

Your Flight Captain/Conference Chair, Jose Andalis

Subject: WACUHO Annual Conference Broadcast

Hello WACUHO Passengers!

Well, it's only a matter of days until we all converge at the Hyatt Regency. The planning committees are looking forward to welcoming you to our conference journey. We are in the final stages of our "flight plan" but want to make sure you are ready for departure. In that regard please inform your flight crew of the following:

Contact Celina Noriega at noriegac@csusb.edu if you registered for the conference and have not received your confirmation.

Contact Jose Andalis at jandalis@menlo.edu if you have folks who are attending the conference but for some reason are not pre-registered . For example, if staff is waiting for campus approval or planning on doing day registration on site. We are trying to get accurate registration counts in order to work better with our vendors and conference hotel. Any information ahead of time
will help in that process.

Please remember as well, anyone who comes to the conference, including presenters, are obligated to register for the conference.

For more information on the conference, please link to the website through the www.wacuho.org homepage.

See you next week! And remember to set your clock one hour ahead this weekend (Spring forward)!!! We don't want you to (literally) miss your flights! Take care.

Subject: WACUHO Mentoring Project

The New Professionals Committee is seeking mentors and mentees to participate in the Mentoring Project at the 2006 Annual Conference.

If you are planning to attend the conference and would like to participate in this unique experience, please fill out the on-line questionnaire at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=427391910323 by March 31st.

What is the mentoring project?
The mentoring project pairs up one or more mentees (usually a New Professional or Graduate Student) with an experienced colleague in the field (mid-level or higher). We try to pair mentors and mentees based on similar interests, career paths, etc. The mentor and mentees meet at the Annual Conference and have the opportunity to connect face to face, share experiences and ask questions at the Mentoring Breakfast that will take place on Monday morning of the conference. After that, the mentor and mentees are encouraged to continue communication beyond the conference.

We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity.

Subject: WACUHO Conference Placement Center

Greetings WACUHO,

Are you looking for top quality candidates to fill your positions at your respective institutions? Are you an individual who is looking for a new job / the next challenging position in your career? If so, don't forget the WACUHO placement center. This wonderful resource is free to all WACUHO members.

The placement center will be located in the hospitality suite at the annual conference. If you are an employer and you would like to post your job description, please e-mail me an electronic copy at mary.tregoning@ucr.edu on or before March 29th. If you are a candidate and you would like to post your resume in the placement center, please e-mail me an electronic copy of at
mary.tregoning@ucr.edu on or before March 29th. If you have any last minute vacancies or resumes please feel free to bring a hard copy with you to the conference. We will include them in our employer/candidate binders.

Please note we will provide you with a mailbox, access to both employer and candidate informational binders, as well as employer and candidate communication forms. It will be your responsibility to coordinate meetings / interview times with one another. Due to space constraints we will not be able to provide interview rooms at this years convention. But there are plenty of
reasonably quiet hotel common areas that will be perfect as an interview setting. Conducting interviews in private sleeping rooms is highly discouraged by WACUHO. Good luck with your searches, I hope to hear from you soon.

Subject: WACUHO Diversity and Affirmative Action Awards

Dear WACUHO Member,

Does your institution or department or any specific member of it go above and beyond the call of duty when addressing issues related to diversity or affirmative action? The WACUHO Diversity and Affirmative Action committee would like to invite you to nominate your colleagues and/or institution for a Diversity and Affirmative Action (D&AA) Award of Recognition. The presentation of the award will take place in April at the annual conference being held at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, CA.

Your nomination would provide you with the opportunity to recognize your peers for their efforts in promoting diversity and awareness on their campus. The Diversity and Affirmative Action committee will select one individual and one institution that has made significant contributions during the 2006-2007 academic year. The winners will receive a cash prize in addition to a

Please be advised that all nomination forms and supporting materials must be postmarked no later than March 24, 2006. If you have any questions about completing the nomination form or about the awards in general, please feel free to contact me at Mia Love at novegies@stanford.edu or 650.724.3680

Dear Colleague,

Last month, a letter was mailed to you inquiring into your interest of your institution hosting the WACUHO 2008 conference. The Time and Place Committee is looking for a few good institution(s) interested in bidding to host this great event. You don’t have to go it alone either. If it so moves you, call up a colleague and make it a partnership venture.

Hosting the WACUHO Annual Conference provides the institution(s) involved the experience to get to know and work with others from various institutions across the western region. Additionally, the hosting institution(s) will have the opportunity to show off their school and their city.

We have attempted to simplify the bidding process by including a sample bid packet; please have your packet include all elements as in the attached sample. The deadline has been extended for you to submit your bid by 5pm, Friday, March 10, 2006. All completed bids should be either e-mailed to the Time & Place Chair (Dana Pysz, danap@orl.ucla.edu) as attachments, or mailed to:

If you have any questions regarding the bidding process itself, or need recommendations, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Attached is a document that contains information on how to create a bid and also a bid template draft.

Don’t miss this incredible chance to be the institution that helps to give the greatest showcase of the year, for all colleges and universities professionals affiliated with “WACUHO”. It is never too early to start thinking about what a great time you and your colleagues will have hosting WACUHO 2008.

Subject: WAVES Submission Deadline

Hello WACUHO,

I hope this message finds you back from your holiday break rested and ready to dive into the new year.

Speaking of the new year, how about considering making a resolution to being more involved with WACUHO? If your resolutions include becoming more active in our profession, mentoring the next generation of housing officers, or meeting new colleagues in our region, WACUHO can help you meet your goals! Get involved by writing an article for the Winter edition of the WAVES and letting us know what's going on at your campus.

The submission deadline for the next edition is Wednesday, January 11th. Articles should be emailed to me as word documents with photos attached as jpegs. The WAVES will be published at the end of January.

Best wishes,
Hallie Lewis

Subject: WTI 2006

Still considering whether or not to attend the Western Training Institute (WTI) on January 26-29, 2006 in Reno, Nevada? Here is some information that might encourage you to attend! Learn about the Resident Scholar teams who will facilitate most of the institute as well as what the city of Reno has to offer!

Andy Klingelhoefer, Dean of Student Life at California State University in Monterey Bay, and Valarie E. Brown, PhD, Dean of Enrollment Management at Cogswell Polytechnical College, plan to focus on the core competencies needed for housing and residential life staff. They will utilize feedback provided from a recent survey, as well as research that has been conducted and reported on through ACUHO-I programs and publications. Their interactive sessions will ask WTI participants to consider core competencies and develop a personal plan for utilizing and building on core competencies they already have, as well as developing new ones.

Staci Buchwald, Associate Dean of Students/Residential Life at Scripps College, and Stuart Huggins, Resident Director at Pepperdine University, will focus on the premise that in order to act as an effective change agent in your organization, people should act from their place of strength. In order to help WTI participants identify and analyze their strengths, prior to arriving at UNR Reno, each person will complete the 30-minute on-line Strengthsquest Assessment. The cost of the assessment is being graciously donated and is a benefit of registration in WTI. The interactive sessions will include activities designed to get people comfortable with their strengths, how to nurture them, and how to engage others in this model.
