ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA MARITIME ACADEMY:
The California Maritime Academy is a specialized campus of the California State University (CSU) system offering six baccalaureate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering Technology, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation, Business Administration, and Global Studies & Maritime Affairs. The Academy also offers a Master of Science degree in Transportation and Engineering Management. The curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant mariners, coast guard and naval reserve officers. The California Maritime Academy serves a population of approximately 850 students. The campus is situated in Vallejo on the shore of the Carquinez Strait and 30 miles northeast of San Francisco. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Housing Management
Responsible for one undergraduate Residence Hall of approximately 200 students. Coordinates student and summer conference housing, room selection process, room assignments, single room management/billing, room inspections, damage assessment and billing, check-in/check-out processes, occupancy records/reports, and key control.

First Year Experience
Plans, develops, and implements a comprehensive First Year Experience program which complements the academic curriculum for the various majors.

Supervising of Para-Professional Assistants
Assists with recruitment, selection, training and evaluating the performance of student assistants and summer work crew. Coordinates the Resident Assistant recruitment process. Supervises the student Resident Assistants.

Student Development
Maintains a residential climate conducive to optimum academic achievement, individual personal growth and successful group living. Contributes to campus affirmative action and diversity goals. Provides personal assistance to individual students and groups including conflict resolution and mediation. Facilitates student/campus communications. Resolves conduct issues in the residence halls

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• The Coordinator of Residence Life/First Year Experience is required to live on-campus. Meal plan and a furnished, on-campus apartment is provided for a nominal fee. Three Residence Life professional staff will share 24-hour on-call duties with a student Hall Director; however, actual working time is varied and flexible. The incumbent will be required to work a variety of shifts that may include working days, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.

• A valid California Driver’s License, CPR and First Aid certificates must be acquired within six months of hire and maintained thereafter.

• Must complete a background investigation and pre-employment physical, including a drug test, prior to beginning work.

• Will be required to provide Residence Life Coordinator support for up to two months with Summer Conference Housing and/or on the annual training cruise. The incumbent must complete an annual pre-cruise physical and drug test for participation in the training cruise as well as have or be able to obtain a U.S. Passport. The international cruise duties include student development, and operation of Pirate’s Cove.

• The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) will supervise, live and work in a 3-story residence hall that has no elevator and must be physically able to coordinate emergency evacuation procedures as required. The RLC will also work on the T.S. Golden Bear and needs to be able to climb many stair towers on a daily basis. The on-campus work environment is non-air conditioned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• A Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: behavioral science, public or business administration or a job-related field AND two years of professional experience.

• Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, Management, Public Administration, Sociology, or other related education field is strongly preferred and may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

• A working knowledge of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education.
An understanding of student, staff, and leadership development, and multicultural issues.

• Working knowledge of management techniques and personnel practices.

• Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.

• Ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other departmental and university-wide goals.

• Solid administrative and organizational skills (including the ability to effectively utilize computer hardware and software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PeopleSoft and Blackboard).

• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

• The ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others.

• The ability to make reasoned and balanced decisions in moderately complex situations.

• The ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation and functions of the Campus Life Department and Leadership Development.

Salary Range: $3519- $5002 per month. Anticipated hiring range $3519 - $3700, depending on experience.
