Northern RAP 2003

Community Service

Community Service is one of tne of the traditions at Northern RAP. Each year we choose an organization/project in or near the community hosting us and support them with some kind of work and/or donations. This year, our community service partner is teh Eden Area YMCA.

Eden Area YMCA provides all types of Y programs, but their primary focus is child care. YMCAs are dedicated to providing high quality, affordable child care. As the nation's largest provider of child care programs, YMCAs provide family centered, values based programs to nurture children's healthy development. Well trained staff provide safe, affordable, high quality care. Like all Y programs, child care is open to all, with financial aid available. Staff members are partners with parents and other caregivers, working together to help kids grow up healthy, happy and strong.

YMCAs provide age appropriate experiences, from infant/toddlers to preschool to school aged. The Y gives individuals the chance to express their talents in the arts, sports and other areas of interests.

The 2003 Northern RAP will present all donations collected from the Community Service Project to the Eden Area YMCA. What is needed? Any donations will be accepted, however we suggest the following: children's books, general books, videos/DVDs, sporting equipment, art supplies, or money donations. We want to thank you in advance for your support in this endeavor!

Although participating in the community service aspect of Northern RAP is not required, almost all schools do something to participate. This year, community service donations will also connect with our Spirit Award. Some ideas for ways to get involved:

  • host a fundraiser at your institution and donate the proceeds
  • distribute bins around the halls on your campus for item donations
  • do a one-night 'item collection drive' where the delegates attending canvas their hall for donations/items
  • do programs with your local YMCA child care group
  • have competitions among those attending NRAP ... big (i.e. the individual bringing the most items gets an ice cream social for her/his floor) or small (i.e. each individual who brings a donation gets $5 more of their registration cost covered by the university)
