February 15, 1957

John Yarborough, Director of Residence, Stanford University
“There are many housing problems common to California Universities and Colleges. For some time now a number of us have been talking about forming an organization that will bring us together once or twice yearly where we can discuss our various difficulties. With this thought in mind, Christine Ricker and John Yarborough, Stanford University, join with their friend, Don Watts, California State Polytechnic College, to help us form a California Association of University and College Housing Officers.
Each of us has his own problems, as you well know. But there are many common problems which we can solve by pooling our experiences. That is why we are going to try to form a group at Stanford University on March 27th. At this time we want you to be there to give us the benefit of your thinking.”

30 individuals met at Stanford University to form the California Association of University and College Housing Officers

October 24, 1958

University of Santa Clara
“Both men and women should be considered for all offices of CACUHO.”
Dinner cost $2.50

April 3, 1959

University of California, Berkeley
“RA’s should not handle disciplinary problems.”

April 16, 1962

The annual conference was first held at a hotel instead of on a campus due to school calendars not matching with the easter vacation.

April 3, 1963

Rickeys Hyatt House, Palo Alto
Gordon W Newell, Stanford Research Institute, spoke of “Foods of the Future” and said trends included meal-in-a-package, space foods, safe use of chemicals, and foods to prolong life.

April 12, 1964

Cal Poly, Pomona
Joan Mortell chaired a training committee that led to the Western Training Institute. Joan was from the University of Colorado and the new Dean of Housing Services at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

John Yarborough commented: “There are large dorms in Russia with mixed occupancy. Pregnancy is a problem.”
 

April 11, 1965

Hawaii, Nevada, and Arizona joined CACUHO

April 3, 1966

The Western Training Institute was announced by CACUHO, ACUHO, and the Graduate School of Business Administration at UCLA

March 19, 1967

Ruth N. Donnelly was the first woman president of CACUHO

April 4, 1971

Northern RAP and Southern RAP have positions on the CACUHO board

1979 

Pacific Management Seminar - designed for training needs of directors was held at Lake Arrowhead.

April 12-15, 1987

Charlie Miller was the first African American President of CACUHO and 1987 was held at Hawaii and hosted by University of Hawaii Manoa for the first time

April 12-15, 1992

CACUHO agrees to change their name to WACUHO (a process that had been considered since 1978 and 1982

2000 

WACUHO officially affiliates with ACUHO-I!

2004-2025

WACUHO joined forces with ACPA, NASPA, ACUI- Region 15, WACE, and NODA-Region 11 to co-sponsor “Western Regional Careers in Student Affairs Day” held at Cal Poly Pomona.

2014 

Women of WACUHO committee started

2019 

PEP (Peers Empowering Parents) Committee started

2020 

Officer for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion was created as part of the WACUHO E-Board for a 2 year term position.

Our History

Founded in 1957 as the California Association of College and University Housing Officers (CACUHO), the Association has grown substantially over the past half decade prompting its name change in 1994 to the Western Association of College and University Housing Officers (WACUHO). This page contains documents and a timeline that helps to outline and highlight significant points in WACUHO's history.
