WACUHO is seeking a passionate and engaged professional to serve as our next Member-at-Large for Student Development.

This role serves as a connection between WACUHO and student leaders working in housing and residence life. The Member-at-Large helps expand access to leadership development, mentorship, wellness resources, professional engagement, and career growth opportunities for students across the region.

You may be a strong fit for this position if you bring:

Overview: This session explores the hidden emotional labor of supervision and challenges the belief that effective leadership requires constant self-sacrifice. Participants will reflect on how depletion shows up in their leadership, how systems reinforce overextension, and what sustainable supervision can look like in practice. Attendees will leave with language and strategies for leading with clarity, boundaries, and care without pouring from an empty cup.

Overview: The climate around equity and inclusion is shifting, and student affairs professionals are feeling the pressure. Despite restrictions on DEI, students bring diverse identities and needs that can’t be ignored. This session moves beyond performative DEI checklists, offering bold, practical strategies for building inclusive campus communities, even when the “DEI playbook” is challenged.

Overview: This session will focus on San Diego State's mold and IAQ response over the past 5 years, share our lessons learned and our ever evolving response protocols. This session will include insights from seasoned administrators, environmental health and safety professionals and building engineers. Overview: This session invites participants to take a bold (and slightly uncomfortable) look in the mirror and explore how our choices, reactions, and blind spots shape the outcomes we experience. Together, we’ll unpack what personal accountability really means, why we sometimes avoid it, and how our “shadow side” quietly influences our leadership, relationships, and decision-making.

Overview: This roundtable provides a space for connection, reflection, and dialogue centered on the lived experiences of Black professionals in housing and residential life during a time of ongoing social, political, and institutional strain. Participants will discuss support, care, sustainability, and community while reflecting on how to navigate personal and professional needs while supporting others.

Overview: This session explores how integrating service learning into RA training transformed student leadership development at UCSB through an experiential Service Project Day centered on planting trees for migrating butterflies. Attendees will learn how intentional service experiences can strengthen engagement, learning, and community within training programs, while gaining a replicable model for creating their own service-driven leadership initiatives.

Missed us at WACE 2026? Join us on June 4th from 11am-12pm for “Creating a Performance Evaluation Culture Shift: A System-Level Redesign of Student Staff Evaluation”, presented by Alexis Karakas, Sunday Wallace, Roger Becker, and Antonio Robinson.

Overview: Student staff evaluation in residential life can often be fragmented, with misalignment among training, supervision, assessment, and selection practices. This session examines a year-long, collaborative redesign of a Resident Advisor (RA) performance evaluation system at a large public research university that intentionally integrated these elements.
